Aerodynamic design of a flying-wing aircraft

  • The flying-wing layout with cranked planform is a research focus in recent years due to its superiority on aerodynamics and stealth. Major difficulty in its design for longitudinal performance is how to obtain high lift/drag ratio with the constraint of low pitching moment coefficient. A flying-wing layout was constructed in term of some ideas about the planform, the location of the centre of gravity, and the airfoil optimization/arrangement in this paper. The viability of these ideas was verified through numerical simulations and a low speed wind tunnel test. The computational results presented in figures exhibit that the flying-wing layout have relatively high maximum lift/drag ratio and low pitching moment coefficient at the given subsonic design point.
