Study of aerodynamic and stealthy performance for a multifunctional morphing tail

  • Flying wing has good aerodynamic and stealthy performance with defects of incompetent lateral-directional stability and control. In this paper, a multifunctional morphing tail for low-aspect-ratio flying wing configuration is presented which can automatically change aerodynamic configuration based on flight and missions condition. According to the analysis of aerodynamic and stealthy performance, the results of wind tunnel test, and compact antenna test, it is shown that the multifunctional morphing tail fins significantly improves the lateral static stability of the flying-wing. The Cnβ increased from -0.0001 to 0.0004 at Ma=0.9、α=0° with 45° opening tail fins. At Ma=0.9 and 2.0, the aerodynamic focus respectively moves backward 1.0% bA and forward 5.3% bA with 45° opening tail fins. The radar cross section(RCS) for scale model increases about 5dBsm(X~Ku band), especialy for the vertical-vertical (VV) polarimetric scattering. The multifunctional morphing tail is useful for designing low-aspect-ratio flying wing configuration with lateral-directional stability and control.
