Abstract:
Firstly, the concepts of von Kármán vortex street, vortex-induced vibration(VIV) and flutter associated with flow-induced vibrations of bridges were introduced. On this basis, the historical research controversies of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was described. And it was clarified that the aerodynamic failure mechanism responsible for the collapse of the Tacoma was flutter rather than VIV. The vibration of Humen Bridge and the aerodynamic mechanism of the VIV in the field of wind engineering were discussed. The mechanisms of the amplitude-limited VIV and lock-in were essentially structural self-excited vibration, and von Kármán vortex street worked as an inducement rather than a direct push. Finally, the differences and commonalities of various flow-induced vibration problems were discussed.
